ABSTRACT
Muscle injuries are common in the international and professional soccer scene, being the primary cause of players' absence from training sessions and official competitions. Given their significant impact on athletic performance, it is expected that sports medicine doctors possess the ability to make accurate diagnoses, manage injuries appropriately, and provide precise prognoses to ensure athletes' successful return to competitions in a timely manner. Proper classification of these injuries is essential for making informed decisions about their management. In this regard, various scales have been developed for categorizing and grading muscle injuries based on the mechanism, anatomical location, symptoms, findings from physical examination, and imaging study characteristics. Although the Munich Consensus, the British Athletics Federation proposal, and FC Barcelona's system are widely used standardized systems, there is a variety of terms employed, which can complicate comparisons between scales and hinder their implementation. Therefore, it is crucial for sports medicine professionals to clearly understand the applicability and distinctions among the most used scales for classifying and grading muscle injuries. Sports teams employ different scales for classifying injuries based on their experience and training. For instance, at Club de Fútbol Monterrey, we use FC Barcelona's MLG-R classification. Hence, the purpose of this review is to describe the proposed systems for muscle injury classification and grading, with the aim of identifying similarities and differences among these proposals.
