ABSTRACT
Thyroid storm is a serious complication of hyperthyroidism and is considered an endocrinological emergency associated with high mortality. It is a disease of systemic compromise characterized by tachycardia, increased temperature, altered state of consciousness, diarrhea, jaundice, among other multi-organ symptoms. The diagnosis is mainly clinical, it is oriented by identifying triggering factors and must be carried out quickly to initiate timely specific management. Treatment is focused on rapidly decreasing the concentration of thyroid hormones through different mechanisms: blocking the new synthesis of hormones, blocking the release of preformed hormones, inhibiting the peripheral transformation of T4 to T3 and in some cases direct removal of thyroid hormones or a thyroidectomy. However, correcting the trigger factor and providing multi-organ support are crucial to improve the prognosis of patients.
