ABSTRACT
Cancer is one of the main causes of global mortality and is positioned as the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases, causing approximately 1 in 6 deaths. Gynecological malignancies constitute a serious public health problem as they remain a major cause of cancer-related mortality, with an estimated annual incidence of more than 3.6 million cases and more than 1.3 million deaths. They represent almost 40% of all cancer incidences and more than 30% of all cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Anesthesia and specific intensive care for gynecological-oncological surgeries require extensive specialized knowledge for better perioperative management of these cases and to reduce postoperative complications and improve overall and cancer-free survival after surgery. The advanced specialization in oncoanesthesia and the Pain Out program, through its two projects in Mexico, have enhanced our understanding of the needs of cancer patients, thereby enabling us to achieve anesthetic and analgesic management with clear oncological objectives. In this narrative review, we aim to examine the key components of providing anesthesia and analgesia for major surgical procedures for gynecologic tumors. The MEDLINE
®, PubMed, Springer, UpToDate, and EMBASE
™ databases were searched for peer-reviewed articles discussing anesthetic management in oncologic surgeries.
