ABSTRACT
Closure by secondary intention and closure by first intention are
equivalent in terms of patient satisfaction or cosmetic outcome.
Regarding second intention healing, most surgeons prefer it when
dealing with small defects, superficial wounds or patients with
low esthetic expectations, although despite this, it is important
to choose properly according to the type of wound presented and
to individualize each patient. Other factors that should be considered
when assessing the suitability of closure by secondary intention
are the size, and depth of the wound. Superficial wounds
heal better by secondary intention than deep wounds. Skin color
is also an important consideration, as wounds healed by secondary
intention tend to produce a hypopigmented scar, which may
be less noticeable, and therefore more cosmetically acceptable in
fair-skinned individuals. We report the case of a young patient with
basal cell carcinoma who was treated by second intention closure.
