ABSTRACT
Objective: To clinically characterize the use of blood products in polytraumatized
patients treated in the emergency department of a high complexity hospital in Medellin,
Colombia.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive, observational study, which included adult
polytraumatized patients who required transfusion of blood products from 2010 to 2017.
The sampling was non-probabilistic of consecutive cases, the source of information
was secondary through the review of medical records and data analysis was performed
through the SPSS version 24 program.
Results: A total of 157 patients were included, with a median age of 29 years,
82.1% were male, the predominant mechanism of trauma was motorcycle traffic accident
(41.4%), 66.9% of units were administered in the hospitalization service, out of
98.7% of patients who required red blood cells, 43.9% did not present any outcome
after the care received and 2.6% of the patients died 24 hours after admission to the
emergency department.
Conclusions: Transfusion of these components did not represent a major risk for the
life of the patients nor was it a cause of serious outcomes. Nonetheless, the importance
of blood products in the context of polytraumatized patients is noteworthy, especially
red blood cells and their timely administration.
