ABSTRACT
Introduction: when there are bone defects that affect the placement of a dental implant, the creation of an optimal bone support is mandatory to guarantee an ideal functional and esthetic result. Bone reconstruction makes it possible to restore anatomy, symmetry, function and esthetics by means of bone substitutes. The autologous block graft of the chin area is one of the main alternatives, it presents osteogenic, osteoinductive, osteoconductive properties and an easy and fast access.
Objective: to review the literature on autologous chin grafting as an alternative for reconstructing atrophic alveolar ridges in implant dentistry.
Material and methods: this was a retrospective, analytical, literature review type study, using a keyword search algorithm (chin graft, autologous graft, bone reconstruction), by searching and analyzing articles in English and Spanish, in information sources such as ScienceDirect, PubMed, Cochrane, Google Scholar and Scielo. The results were analyzed and tabulated for the development of the study.
Results: the literature reports that there are different ways to obtain the chin block graft, with trephines, drills, chisels and piezoelectric devices; fixation is performed with osteosynthesis screws to avoid pseudarthrosis and the most common complication is neurosensory alteration.
Conclusion: the autologous chin graft is a reliable alternative, it allows reconstructing atrophic alveolar ridges and placing a dental implant satisfactorily, when combined with guided bone regeneration it increases the success rate and the use of digital planning minimizes the risk of complications, especially neurosensory complications.
