ABSTRACT

Introduction: the nasoalveolar molder is an orthopedic device that is used in the pre-surgical stage in patients with cleft lip and palate. Objective: evaluate the utility the use of the pre-surgery nasoalveolar molder in patients with unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate. Material and methods: observational, descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study. 20 patients were analyzed. Measurements were evaluated in two times of the length of the columella, the length of the nostril in a horizontal and vertical direction, and the length of the width of the base of the nasal ala. Results: in patients with unilateral FLP, the difference in the length of the column on the affected side versus the healthy side before and after the necessary treatment (p = 0.034); when comparing the measurements of the affected side before and after the intervention, the length of the columella and the length of the nasal wing in a vertical direction increased (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001). In patients with bilateral CLP, the difference in measurements on each side before and after treatment was only significant for spine length (p = 0.001); and for the width of the nasal base, but only on the right side (p = 0.039). Conclusions: the PNAM is able to increase the vertical length of the columellar in patients with unilateral and bilateral FLP. Early treatment of PNAM decreases the difference in columella before and after treatment in patients with unilateral PLF, achieving post-treatment nasal symmetry.
