ABSTRACT
The objective of the present study was to find out if there is a relation
between vocabulary size and mental rotation. Thirteen 12-month-olds
and typically developed infants participated. Infant vocabulary size
was measured with CDI MacArthur-Bates. Two mental rotation tasks
were designed under a novelty preference procedure. One of the
tasks presented fixed familiarization trials in silence and for the other
one, a verbal cue was presented; test trials were presented in silence.
It was found a significant correlation between comprehended words
and novelty preference despite the task or the gender. There were
also correlations for semantic categories: Locative Adverbs, Furniture
and rooms, People and Vehicles (real or toy). The relations showed
the infant's experience with words related to the recognition of objects
because words are used to identify and categorize object, even when
there are different new angles of a dynamic object.
