Chronic idiopathic ulcerative colitis: Epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis

ABSTRACT

Ulcerative colitis is the most common inflammatory bowel disease clinically conditioned by an inflammation of the colonic mucosa and rectum, which causes ulcerations, diarrhea, blood in the stool and abdominal pain. Its etiology is still unknown, but it is hypothesized about an alteration of the immune response to specific stimuli. It’s classified according to its severity, extension and colonic lesions, likewise its classification allows to guide the management, which aims to achieve a remission without the use of steroids, using 5-ASA and biological drugs; being necessary, in some cases, surgery. The most associated complications are toxic megacolon and, in the long term, the increased risk of colorectal cancer and in operated patients the risk of pouchitis.
