ABSTRACT
Aminoglycosides has been used during the past 40 years. They are polycationic substances produced by actinomycetes. Pharmacokinetic characteristics depend on their polarity. Antimicrobial action is favored by alkalin pH. IM and subcutaneous administration is rapidly absorbed. Penetrates the blood-brain barrier when meninges are inflammed. In patients with renal failure blood levels can be toxic. Aminoglycosides are rapid bactericides, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, altering the cytoplasmic wall. Bacterial resistance mechanisms are well known. Therapeutic use is oriented to aerobic Gram-negative bacteria, it is useful for Gram-positive cocos when combined with beta-lactamics. During pregnancy the drug should be given with caution.
