ABSTRACT
Background: Myeloid sarcoma could be the initial manifestation of acute myeloid
leukemia. This neoplasm is characterized by extramedullary dissemination of mature
myeloid cells and immature myeloid cells as well. To diagnose myeloid sarcoma an
opacification of local tissue should be present. There is a male predominance, with a
male:female ratio 1.2:1, it could be seen at any age and every part of the body could
be affected by the disease. The most commonly affected sites are lymphatic ganglia,
skin, soft tissue, bones, testicles, gastrointestinal tract and peritoneum.
Clinical case: A 40-year-old patient diagnosed with myeloid sarcoma during the
approach of a tumor at T11-T12 that on bone marrow biopsy were observed normal
cellularity and the immunohistochemical reports revealed MPO+, CD-43+ and CD117+,
with a proliferation index of 60%.
Conclusions: Myeloid sarcoma affects 2.5-9.1% of patients with acute myeloid
leukemia. The exact mechanism of extramedullary damage is not understood completely.
