ABSTRACT
Introduction. Chlamydia trachomatis is the ethiological agent most frequently found in sexually transmited diseases in both developed and developing countries. Early detection and treatment of these infections is necessary to prevent subsequent upper genital tract infection and its sequelae.
Material and methods. In order to determine the prevalence of cervicovaginal infection by
Chlamydia trachomatis in females we studied 1,200 samples of uterine endocervix of patients at the Clínica de Planificación Familiar del Centro de Investigaciones Regionales “Dr. Hideyo Noguchi” de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán. Detection of the bacterial was done by the enzime immunoassay (EIA).
Results. Patient’s mean age was 28.7 years. The overall prevalence of
Chlamydia trachomatis infection was 8.7%.
Discussion. The results from this study confirmed the high prevalence of asymptomatic infection (65.3%) and emphasize the importance of an oportune diagnostic in order to avoid the sequelae.
