El potencial de la manipulación de la flora intestinal por medios dietéticos sobre la salud humana

RESUMEN
La flora intestinal en el humano guarda una estrecha relación con la salud del hospedero. Es posible manipular la flora intestinal para asegurar los beneficios sobre la salud humana por medio de dos aproximaciones dietéticas. La primera es la aproximación probiótica, mediante la cual bacterias vivas incorporadas a ciertos alimentos son administradas vía oral y son capaces de alcanzar el intestino delgado y colon. Como consecuencia de su crecimiento y actividad metabólica, aportan al hospedero una serie de beneficios que van desde la disminución de la intolerancia a la lactosa y la disminución en la duración de varios tipos de diarreas, hasta un efecto inmunopromotor y prevención en el desarrollo de cáncer de colon. La segunda, es el uso de prebióticos, mediante la cual se proporcionan fuentes de carbono específicas para bacterias probióticas residentes en los intestinos y que favorecen la proliferación selectiva de estas bacterias. Aunque existen evidencias científicas y clínicas que validan los beneficios asociados al consumo de probióticos y prebióticos, existen muchas preguntas aún por contestar sobre sus mecanismos específicos de acción. El presente trabajo ilustra el estado actual en los conceptos de probióticos y prebióticos y el potencial de su manipulación sobre la salud humana.
