Nutritional assessment in patients with HIV

ABSTRACT

The interrelationship that the nutritional state keeps with the infectious diseases has been traditionally emphasized in medicine by the double face of cause-effect that presents. Metabolic response to the infection is a specific pathologic entity that causes hyporexia, malabsorption, catabolism and particularly negative protein balance. Malnutrition decreases the immunologic and mechanical defences, reduces the resistance to the pathogenic aggression and to the development of infections. In Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) disease we find metabolic, gastrointestinal and immunological disorders of different magnitude, closely associated with the nutritional alterations in a reciprocal dependent relationship. Patient with HIV require a special nutritional handling for short, medium and long-term goals, based on meticulous nutritional diagnosis integrated by clinical, dietary, anthropometric, biochemical and functional tests. With reliable indicators obtained through specifically trained professionals and equipped laboratories it is possible to determine the existence, degree and stage of malnutrition and the outcome prognostic. Rigorous nutritional assessment optimize therapeutic procedures in patients reducing the malnutrition morbidity and the metabolic complications of HIV-disease treatments.
