ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the experience acquired in performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy at a Third level health care hospital in the city of Veracruz, state of Veracruz, Mexico, by analyzing morbidity.
Design: Retrospective and observational study.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Statistical analysis: Percentages as summary measure for qualitative variables.
Patients and methods: The clinical records of 752 patients with chronic cholelithiasis subjected to laparoscopic cholecystectomy from January 2, 2001 to April 30, 2003 were reviewed. The following variables: gender, age, conversion index, surgical time, transoperative complications, re-interventions, hospital stay days, inability to work days, morbidity, and mortality were analyzed.
Results: Women represented 85% of the patients, average age of 45 years. Surgical indication was chronic cholelithiasis, conversion index was of 3.77%, average surgical time was of 61 minutes, transoperative complications in Clavien’s grade III corresponded to 53% of the cases, 0.26% re-intervention, patients discharged during the first 24 postoperative hours corresponded to 96.06%, morbidity was of 3.7%, mortality of 0.0, inability to work days were 10.16.
Conclusion: The incidence of morbidity at our hospital is within internationally accepted levels.
