Discoid lateral meniscus: literature review

ABSTRACT
The discoid meniscus is an abnormal morphological variant that usually affects the lateral meniscus. The abnormality encompasses a spectrum in the shape, size, stability, and coverage of the tibial plateau. The overall incidence is estimated to vary between 3% and 17% for the lateral meniscus. Current reviews recommend classifying the discoid meniscus taking into account the following parameters: discoid morphology (complete or incomplete), peripheral stability or instability, and presence or absence of meniscal tears. The clinical presentation of a patient with discoid meniscus is variable, it can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Magnetic resonance imaging is the modality of choice to confirm the diagnosis of a discoid meniscus. The treatment method depends on several factors such as symptoms, age of the patient, type of meniscal tear, and chronicity. Meniscal preservation strategies are preferred due to the risk of developing osteoarthritis secondary to meniscectomie. Improvements in surgical treatment have led to good long-term results. This article reviews the current developments in epidemiology, classifications, imaging studies, diagnosis, and treatment of symptomatic discoid meniscus in the pediatric population, as well as postoperative results and risk factors.
