ABSTRACT
Introduction: At the Institute of Expert Services and Forensic Sciences of Mexico City (INCIFO) more than 5,000 autopsies are performed per year with a great diversity of criteria and variables; there is currently no standardization of requirements for the development of the medico-legal autopsy procedure.
Objective: To develop a work tool that standardizes the minimum parameters necessary for the medicolegal autopsy procedure, according to the context of Mexico City.
Methods: International guidelines regarding medical-legal autopsies were reviewed and the minimum necessary elements of the procedure were identified. The 10 main causes of death in the INCIFO in the year 2019 were analyzed. Supervisions were carried out in the amphitheater of the medico-legal necropsy procedures, to identify faults or omissions.
Results: A data recording tool was designed that evaluates 476 items of the medicolegal autopsy protocol; it allowed to standardize and establish the minimum requirements for the development of a complete medical-legal autopsy procedure.
Conclusion: A work tool was developed that allows standardizing the elements of the medicolegal autopsy procedure applied to the context of Mexico City.
