ABSTRACT
Introduction. Bile duct stenosis includes a broad spectrum of benign or malignant pancreatic hepatobiliary diseases; Sometimes it is complex to determine the benign or malignant aetiology of these lesions, which is why it is necessary to use effective and non-invasive methods such as smolecular biomarkers.
Methods. A prospective diagnostic validation study was performed in 50 patients diagnosed with bile duct stenosis by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in the period of one year, the main variables of the study were type of biliary stenosis, cytological study of biliary stenosis. and molecular biomarkers (CA-19.9; CA-125).
Results. Male sex predominated in 60% of patients. The mean age was 64.7 years. 80% of the patients presented malignant-looking stenosis of the bile duct in ERCP and 20% benign-looking; more than 50% of the malignant stenosis presented high tumor markers and positive cytology.
Conclusions. Tumor markers CA 19-9 and CA-125 are useful for the diagnosis of malignant bile duct strictures.
