ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cancer is considered a disease in the elderly. The risk for cancer increases with age due to a longer period of exposure to many carcinogens. In general, there is currently a tendency to limit cancer-specific treatment due to advanced age.
Objective: To determine the clinical-biological characteristics of aged adult patients treated with radiotherapy at Vladimir Ilich Lenin Hospital in the period from January to December 2015.
Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out with 154 aged adult patients, carriers of the first five most frequent locations of cancer, who attended the radiotherapy consultation of Holguín Oncology Center in the period from January to December 2015. For the study, we used the theoretical methods of analysis and synthesis and descriptive statistics.
Results: We found that the most affected age group was that from 70 to 79 years (70.1% of the cases), with a predominance of males, accounting for 56.4% of the patients. Lung cancer was the most frequent tumor in men; and breast neoplasia, in women, accounting for 31% and 31.4%, respectively. 64.8% of the patients were diagnosed with stages II and III of the disease. 44.1% of the patients studied had a complete response to radiotherapy.
Conclusions: Radiotherapy is a basic pillar for treating the aged adult patient diagnosed with cancer. Age was not a factor that influenced response to treatment.
