ABSTRACT
Human reproduction represents a fundamental element in the health-sciences, due to the implications they have on the
physical, mental and social well-being of the mother and child. Prognostic factors of great importance are the relationship
between gestational age and birth weight. The purpose of the study is to relate maternal age with the week of the gestation
and to estimate the frequency of birth weight.
Retrospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study of live births during the period from January 1, 2016 to December
31, 2020 in at the General Hospital.
Of 26,874 births, 51.6% were male, 76.7% pregnancy women between 19 and 35 years old, late adolescents 15.2%.
Regarding the gestational age of those born, 78.1% were classified as term and 20.1% premature. The frequency of premature
infants was significantly higher (P= 0.00) in those over 35 years of age.
The demographic dynamics in our country tends to decrease, especially from the correct application of family planning
strategies. Nevertheless, in our environment it is above the national average as well as a higher frequency of prematurity,
especially in elderly women.
The observed data have the potential meaning that in can be a local reference for the implementation of more effective
prenatal control program, in addition to planning the appropriate actions around the perinatal period.
