ABSTRACT
Liver failure in the neonatal period has a mortality of up to 24% and may have an
infectious, metabolic, ischemic and neonatal hemochromatosis etiology. Neonatal
hemochromatosis in up to 80-90% is of autoimmune origin and is known as gestational
alloimmune liver disease, it is produced by the transplacental passage of IgG maternal
immunoglobulins from week 12 of gestation directed against neonatal liver receptors;
It causes severe liver damage accompanied by an iron deposit both in the liver and in
other tissues such as the salivary or thyroid glands, with which the diagnosis is made
either by biopsy or magnetic resonance imaging. Timely treatment reduces its mortality
from 80% to 20% and is by administering gamma globulin at 1 mg/kg/do.
