ABSTRACT
The palatine and lip fissures are common malformations. The cleft lip and palate (CLP) appear regardless of race, sex, culture, or economy. This dysmorphology significantly affects the daily life of children suffering it, damaging their psychological development and their relationship with the environment by feeling socially rejected for its physical appearance. Although it is generally accepted genetic alteration as the most frequent etiology, some cases suggest an environmental cause, so it is claimed to be a multifactorial process of origin.
Objective: To generate the epidemiological and clinical profile, to identify the risk factors of the population with cleft lip and palate to contribute to understand this congenital malformation in our environment.
Material and methods: Transversal, retrospective study, carried out in two specialized centers, the Dental External Clinic, Morelos of ISSEMyM, State of Mexico and the SUMA Foundation of Mexico City.
Results: The left-sided fissure was presented in principally in males (49%); regarding the gestation, CLP was higher in the second pregnancy with 38.1%; 63.3% of patients did not have any inherited antecedent of CLP; 87.3% of mother had no prenatal control; 27% reported living near a river; 39.7% were pregnant at a late age; the highest number of children born in summer (36.5%).
Conclusions: As a result of the analysis of this document, we hope to provide important information demonstrating the need for prenatal monitoring educational programs that can reduce the incidence in families at risk of suffer cleft lip and palate.
