ABSTRACT
In addition to rotavirus, there are other viral agents that cause gastroenteritis in children such as caliciviruses (norovirus
and sapovirus), astrovirus and adenovirus.
Since the introduction of rotavirus vaccines, the frequency of non-flare-associated gastroenteritis, caused by
norovirus genotypes i and ii, has increased. Adenoviruses cause milder diarrhea than rotavirus. Astroviruses cause
almost exclusive watery diarrhea, which usually lasts between three days, having symptoms similar in intensity to
gastroenteritis due to rotavirus or
Salmonella, Shigella or
S. aureus.
Currently in Mexico there are rapid immunochromatographic tests that simultaneously detect rotavirus, astrovirus,
and adenovirus in stool, and others that detect gi and gii norovirus. In the case of hospitalized or immunocompromised
patients, the detection of multiple enteric pathogens (rotavirus, astrovirus, norovirus, sapovirus, and F40/
F41 adenoviruses) by molecular biology systems such as Luminex
® or FilmArray
® is cost-effective. A basic review of
these viral agents is presented.
