ABSTRACT
Introduction: The heart failure is a devastating illness for its high mortality. The association between obesity and mortality in this illness is polemic.
Objective: To evaluate the influence of the obesity in the mortality of the patients of the masculine sex with heart failure chronicle.
Method: we were carried out a prospective study in 109 patients of the masculine sex assisted in the Hospital Ameijeiras for a ten year-old period. Were considered the probability of being free of death, by means of the employment of the method of Kaplan Meier. To identify the association among the clinical variables and of presage in relation to the mortality the relative risk (RR) was determined, to evaluate the value presage the pattern of regression of Cox it was used, Odd Ration (OR) was determined.
Results: The probability of surviving the year of pursuit for the obese ones went 0,86 and to the ten years 0,5; those of normal weight 0,69 a year and none to ten years. The presence of ejection fraction of the left ventricle to <40% was related significantly in the analysis univariado with the risk of death, p = 0,05; RR: 7,14 (IC-95%: 1,18-43,1). The proportional risk of mortality in the time for the obese ones presented an OR: 0,835.
Conclusions: The presence of obesity in the patients of the masculine sex with heart failure chronicle the mortality didn't increase.
