ABSTRACT
A prospective study was done in 74 patients with upper third ureteral stone, 15 (21%) had some of the next criterions inclusions: large stones (> 2.5 cm), chronic severe impaction (> 2 months), after percutaneous drainage, unfavorable stone composition, after failed Shock Wave Lithotripsy, after failed retrograde ureteroscopy. There were no major operative complications. Ureteral perforation was present in 6 patients (40%) and they were treated with internal ureteral stent. The average operative time was 143 mins. 93%had complete stone clearance at the first month and 100% at the end of 3 months. The average hospital stay was 4.6 days and the average follow up was 18.7 months. It is conclude that the percutaneous approach is the first line treatment for patients with upper third ureteral stone and some of the criterions above mentioned.
