Campylobacter: emergente o reemergente

RESUMEN
Campylobacter es una de las cuatro principales causas de gastroenteritis en el mundo; la incidencia y prevalencia se han incrementado en las últimas décadas, tanto en países desarrollados como en vías de desarrollo. La mayoría de los reportes sobre infecciones por
Campylobacter son causadas por
Campylobacter jejuni, considerada una de las principales causas de enteritis transmitida por alimentos contaminados al humano. Su importancia clínica ha aumentado por especies emergentes como
Campylobacter concisus y
Campylobacter ureolyticus; las aves de corral son el principal reservorio y fuente de transmisión hacia los humanos. Las bacterias campylobacter se encuentran ampliamente distribuidas en un gran número de especies animales como ganado, aves de corral, animales domésticos y silvestres. Entre los factores de riesgo se encuentran el consumo de productos animales, agua, leche, contacto con animales y viajeros internacionales. La implementación de estrategias y medidas de control para reducir la transmisión de este grupo de patógenos es fundamental para la salud pública; sobre todo porque la campylobacteriosis es una enfermedad infecciosa importante y un desafío global para la salud en los años venideros, debido al incremento en la resistencia antimicrobiana que ha adquirido
Campylobacter a los antimicrobianos clínicamente importantes. Esta revisión proporciona una perspectiva del estado actual de infecciones causadas por
Campylobacter.
