Aspectos básicos del manejo de la vía aérea: anatomía y fisiología

RESUMEN
El conocimiento de la anatomía y la fisiología de la vía aérea son de suma importancia para la atención inicial del paciente con descompensaciones sistémicas. La revisión actual pretende mencionar las características más importantes de la vía aérea superior e inferior, desmembrando cada uno de los órganos constituyentes y mostrando su rol en el funcionamiento del sistema respiratorio, sus determinantes en el proceso de emergencia de la vía aérea y su importancia a la hora de manejar vía aérea avanzada. En la segunda parte se evalúan las variables fisiológicas que hacen posible la ventilación y respiración como elemento funcional del cuerpo humano, mostrando aspectos relevantes los procesos de difusión del gas, distribución ventilación-perfusión, tono vascular y volúmenes pulmonares. El conocimiento tanto de la anatomía como de la fisiología es el complemento del manejo inicial por parte del personal entrenado en manejo de la vía aérea.
