RESUMEN
El tejido adiposo es una fuente importante de energía para el cuerpo humano. También es una importante fuente de adipocitocinas, adiponectina y leptina. La adiponectina interviene en el efecto sensibilizante a la insulina a través del monofosfato de adenosina dependiente de quinasa (AMPK), por las vías de señalización PPAR-α. La reducción del efecto de la adiponectina se ha asociado con la resistencia a la insulina, dislipidemia y aterosclerosis. Se ha observado evidencia de resistencia a la adiponectina en pacientes obesos y después de la alimentación alta en grasas crónica, y puede contribuir a la acumulación de lípidos evidente en estas condiciones. La otra adipokina importante es la leptina. La señal de la leptina se transmite a través de la quinasa de Janus en la vía de transductor de señales y activador de la transcripción (JAK-STAT). En las formas comunes de obesidad coexisten la hiperfagia, hiperinsulinemia e hiperleptinemia.
