Historia natural y clasificaciones de los meningiomas de la base craneal

RESUMEN
Se revisan las clasificaciones para agrupar y diferenciar
los meningiomas de la base del cráneo, así como
la historia natural, en particular de estos tumores
basales. Describimos los diferentes métodos de clasificación
más usados, donde resultó generalizada la
utilidad del sitio de origen de estos tumores como punto
de partida para éstas. En no pocas ocasiones se dificulta
la correcta clasificación de estos tumores en
relación con su sitio de origen por realizarse un diagnóstico
tardío de los mismos; en estas situaciones su
tamaño es considerable y se han extendido por la
base del cráneo. Esto lo vemos con más frecuencia
en la región del seno cavernoso y la región petroclival.
Existen otros aspectos clínicos–radiológicos que no son
rutinariamente usados y hacen que tumores con igual
origen tengan pronósticos, conductas y morbi-mortalidad
diferentes. El diagnóstico incidental, en consonancia
con la tecnología neurorradiológica disponible y su
generalización, seguirá aportando información valiosa
sobre su historia natural. Será necesario el uso cada
vez más meticuloso de estas clasificaciones, así como
la adecuada descripción del volumen tumoral para
poder evaluar mejor la efectividad y seguridad de los
procederes terapéuticos con los que disponemos en
la actualidad.
