El alfa-tocoferol y el ácido alfa-lipoico. Una sinergia antioxidante con potencial en medicina preventiva

RESUMEN
Las especies reactivas de oxígeno (ERO) participan en la inducción
y la progresión del daño en muchas patologías humanas,
tales como: Infarto cardiaco, isquemia cerebral,
neuropatía diabética y enfermedad de Alzheimer, entre otras.
En diversos estudios, se ha descrito el sinergismo entre el
ácido alfa-lipoico (AAL) y la vitamina E (VE) y potentes efectos
antioxidantes pueden ser obtenidos cuando ambos antioxidantes
se utilizan simultáneamente. La presente revisión
resalta los hallazgos recientes que muestran que la combinación
de AAL y VE reduce de manera eficaz el daño oxidativo
en isquemia cardiaca y cerebral, así como en otros procesos
patológicos relacionados con el incremento de las ERO. Ambos
antioxidantes están presentes en una amplia variedad de
alimentos y también se encuentran disponibles también en diversos
suplementos alimenticios y sus efectos colaterales son
escasos. Por lo tanto, el AAL y la VE podrían desempeñar un
papel importante en medicina clínica preventiva y nutrición
humana.
