RESUMEN
Se hizo una revisión bibliográfica de los artículos sobre tics publicados en los últimos 20 años. Los tics son muy frecuentes en la población general, principalmente en la infancia; con frecuencia desaparecen en forma espontánea. Los tics crónicos se asocian con otros trastornos mentales, principalmente con el trastorno por déficit de la atención y el trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo. El trastorno más severo por tics es el síndrome de Gilles de la Tourette. Las mayores dificultades terapéuticas provienen de estos dos trastornos más que de los tics. Recientemente se ha descrito que por lo menos un subgrupo de pacientes con tics tienen titulaciones elevadas de anticuerpos antiestreptococo del grupo A, lo que sugiere que participan mecanismos autoinmunes en la génesis del trastorno. Algunos tipos de intervención psicosocial y varios medicamentos son útiles en el tratamiento de los trastornos por tics.
