RESUMEN
Se describen algunas alteraciones psiquiátricas no descritas en otros artículos de esta serie. Un mal vínculo madre-feto es uno de los principales factores predictivos de una alteración en la relación entre la madre y el lactante: cuando la actitud de la madre hacia el embarazo es de rechazo pertinaz, se requiere psicoterapia. El abuso de sustancias es nocivo para el curso del embarazo y para el feto; por ejemplo, el etanol acorta el periodo de gestación, el bajo peso al nacer en los hijos de madres alcohólicas, no sólo se explica por prematurez, sino que el bebé es pequeño para la edad gestacional. El bebé será adicto al alcohol y puede presentar síntomas de supresión en la etapa neonatal. Las mujeres adictas a los narcóticos tienen multiples problemas emocionales, su bebé se verá afectado por la desnutrición materna y una proporción alta tendrán peso bajo al nacer; en la mayoría de estos bebés ocurrirá un síndrome de supresión poco despues del nacimiento. Reconocer todos estos trastornos e implementar una intervención específica, puede aliviar el sufrimiento de la madre y ayudarla al facilitar su función materna.
