Complicaciones metabólicas y cardiovasculares de la infección por VIH

RESUMEN
La tasa de supervivencia y la calidad de vida de los pacientes con infección por VIH han mejorado notablemente con el tratamiento antirretroviral altamente activo; sin embargo, su indicación se ha relacionado con el síndrome metabólico: lipodistrofia-lipoatrofia, resistencia a la insulina y diabetes mellitus tipo 2 que, junto con otros factores de riesgo preexistentes, contribuyen al incremento de la morbilidad y mortalidad por enfermedades cardiovasculares como: lesión endotelial, pericardiopatías, endocarditis, miocarditis, miocardiopatía dilatada, coronariopatía, hipertensión arterial sistémica, hipertensión pulmonar, toxicidad por fármacos, tumores relacionados con el SIDA y enfermedades tromboembólicas, observadas en estos pacientes.
