Apoyo social y salud: un análisis de género

RESUMEN
En este estudio se analiza la relación entre apoyo social y salud en mujeres y hombres, y las variables sociodemográficas asociadas al apoyo social. La muestra está formada por 2 169 personas adultas de la población general, que participaron de forma voluntaria. Encontramos que las puntuaciones en las escalas del GHQ-28 de síntomas somáticos, ansiedad e insomnio, disfunción social y depresión grave correlacionan significativamente con un bajo apoyo social, siendo los coeficientes ligeramente más altos para las mujeres, excepto en síntomas somáticos y disfunción social. Aunque el apoyo social también correlaciona significativamente con el número de enfermedades autoinformado, los coeficientes son muy bajos. Las correlaciones con las variables sociodemográficas son bajas y significativas sólo en las mujeres. El apoyo social correlaciona con el nivel de estudios y en un sentido negativo con el número de hijos y la edad. No hay diferencias de género entre los casados, pero los solteros perciben menos apoyo social que las solteras. Tanto las mujeres como los hombres profesionales tienen más apoyo social que las personas que desempeñan un empleo manual, y las amas de casa informan de menos apoyo social que aquellas que tienen un empleo no manual y las profesionales.
