Experiencias de pacientes con VIH/SIDA y respuestas de odontólogos ante el tratamiento dental en la Ciudad de México

RESUMEN
Objetivos: Identificar el grado de aceptación de un grupo de odontólogos de práctica privada ante la posibilidad real de atender a pacientes con VIH/SIDA, y las experiencias de estos pacientes al solicitar atención odontológica en la Ciudad de México.
Diseño: Estudio transversal, observacional y descriptivo desarrollado de abril 2005 a marzo 2006.
Métodos: El estudio incluyó un grupo de 400 odontólogos de práctica general, elegidos por un procedimiento aleatorio sistemático que respondieron a una entrevista telefónica, y 400 individuos con VIH/SIDA de dos centros de referencia para VIH en la Ciudad de México que aceptaron llenar un cuestionario anónimo.
Resultados: El 54.5% de los 400 odontólogos no aceptaron atender pacientes con VIH/SIDA, argumentando entre otras razones, sentirse en riesgo, falta de equipo y tiempo. De los pacientes que solicitaron servicio dental privado, 36.7% no informaron al dentista sobre su condición serológica, mientras que en los servicios públicos no informaron en un 4%. Los motivos más frecuentes fueron: temor al rechazo, no considerarlo necesario y confidencialidad.
Conclusiones: Este estudio enfatiza la necesidad de formar dentistas con responsabilidad ética, habilidades y conocimientos, que les permita brindar atención estomatológica no discriminatoria a personas con VIH/SIDA.
