RESUMEN
La enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA) es una demencia degenerativa que se caracteriza por una pérdida lenta y progresiva de las habilidades mentales. Clínicamente es difícil diferenciarla de la demencia vascular, pues en ambas patologías hay un incremento de la proteína tau y disminución de ApoE en el líquido cefalorraquídeo, entre otras similitudes. Investigaciones recientes también hablan de una asociación entre el Alzheimer y la hipertensión arterial. Ruitenberg demostró que en pacientes con diagnóstico de hipertensión, ésta precede en aproximadamente 10 años al diagnóstico de Alzheimer. Esta enfermedad también se asocia con niveles altos de colesterol en la sangre y con la diabetes mellitus, pues ésta puede ser un factor de riesgo para la EA. Asimismo, el infarto del miocardio ha sido asociado con el incremento de la cantidad de placas seniles y la incidencia de la EA en mujeres. Otros factores asociados a la EA son los bajos niveles de la proteína ApoE, y el tabaquismo, aunque la relación con este último no está bien dilucidada.
