RESUMEN
Los ataques isquémicos transitorios (AIT) son trastornos episódicos y focales de la circulación cerebral y retiniana. Es muy importante la identificación oportuna, así como la evaluación etiológica y la terapéutica adecuada en pacientes que padecen esta enfermedad, ya que sólo así podrán prevenir la ocurrencia de un ictus. En la atención primaria de esta enfermedad por lo general es donde se presentan las deficiencias terapéuticas debido al desconocimiento que tiene la población sobre el AIT. Por tratarse de episodios de breve duración, la mayor parte de las veces el médico no asiste al cuadro y al examen físico en el momento inicial de la observación; esto es normal, por ello el diagnóstico clínico depende exclusivamente del interrogatorio. Finalmente, la neuroimagen será esencial para diferenciar otros procesos capaces de simularlo, los estudios neurosonológicos nos ayudarán a definir probable ateromatosis. La terapéutica debe depender de la etiología y otras condicionantes como el control de los factores de riesgo, los antiplaquetarios, la endarterectomía y la anticoagulación.
