RESUMEN
Se describe la importancia del sentido del olfato, que contrasta con la poca atención que le brinda la población en general y los otorrinolaringólogos en particular. Se mencionan las dificultades de su valoración clínica; sin embargo, se insiste en los cambios del olfato que se manifiestan en la cirugía nasal estética y funcional y en todo tipo de enfermedad nasal que da lugar a los trastornos conductivos del olfato. Todo estudio clínico nasal está incompleto si no se realiza el estudio del olfato. Se señala la terminología, la clasificación y los procedimientos diagnósticos y de tratamiento de las alteraciones del olfato. Asimismo, se menciona la importancia de la valoración olfativa en los procesos perceptivos del olfato, es decir, en el sistema nervioso, ya que la hiposmia es un síntoma temprano, casi constante en los procesos neurodegenerativos. El diagnóstico y tratamiento de esta enfermedad debe efectuarlo un otorrinolaringólogo, motivo por el cual debe prepararse en este campo.
