RESUMEN
Recientemente se ha demostrado que el tejido adiposo funciona como un órgano endocrino capaz de secretar adipocitoquinas que participan en la regulación del metabolismo. De particular importancia son la resistina y la adipocitoquina por su papel en la etiología de la resistencia a la insulina, la resistina es un polipéptido específicamente secretado por los adipocitos que se eleva en la obesidad. Su administración a ratones disminuye la acción de la insulina y altera la tolerancia a la glucosa. La adiponectina también secretada por los adipocitos, disminuye en la obesidad y en la diabetes tipo 2; se ha sugerido que la hipoadiponectinemia es un defecto genético primario que contribuye a la etiología de la obesidad y de la resistencia a la insulina.
