ABSTRACT
Background. Among the risk factors for periodontitis, genetic factors have
been described. Interleukin-6 (
IL-6) is a cytokine involved in the infl ammatory
process and periodontal destruction. Polymorphisms in the
IL-6 gene may
explain the risk of suff ering the disease in certain populations.
Objective. To determine the association of the gene g.-174 G›C polymorphism
with stage II grade B periodontitis.
Material and methods. Case-control study. The genotypic and allelic frequencies
of g.-174 G›C were analyzed in 102 subjects, 52 cases with periodontitis stage
II grade B and 50 controls, by quantitative PCR (qPCR). The association of
the polymorphism with the risk for periodontitis was determined by univariate
analysis.
Results. Genotypic frequencies for the g.-174 G›C polymorphism were
determined. The wild homozygous genotype GG was the most prevalent
(90.4 %) in the cases with respect to the controls (78 %), as well as the allele
G (95.2 % and 88 % respectively). The homozygous mutated CC genotype
was observed decreased in controls and absent in cases. The analysis showed no
association of the g.-174 G/C polymorphism with periodontitis stage II grade B.
Discussion. Walker
et al,. (2017) obtained similar results to ours, with the
studied population being African-American from western North Carolina.
Conclusion. No association was observed between the g.-174 G/C polymorphism
and periodontitis stage II grade B. Likewise, a low frequency of the homozygous
mutated CC genotype has been reported, which was found in 2% of the controls
and absent in the cases studied.
