ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the factors associated with mortality in premature before 34
weeks´gestation, in a second-level-hospital.
Materials and Methods: Retrospective cohort, in preterm ±34 weeks and birth
weight ±1500 g admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We reviewed the
gestational age, gender, weight, 1-minute and 5-minute Apgar scores, CRIB II score,
resuscitation, ventilation type and maternal variables: age, prenatal care, disorders during
pregnancy, antenatal corticosteroid therapy and neonatal mortality. The descriptive
statistics analysis was employed Statistical analysis descriptive and relative risk, 95%
confidence intervals.
Results: Overall mortality was 19.1% in the first 7 days of life, 55.5% female, mean
weight 771.1 ± 189 g, 88.8% extremely preterm, 1 minute Apgar score of 7 a 10 was
25.5%, Apgar of 4 a 6 on 36.1% and 5 minutes ‹ 7 was 25%. Mortality increased
with score CRIB II ›10. Only the score CRIB II was 18.8 is associated with mortality.
Conclusions: The mortality risk is inversely proportional to the weight and gestational
age in the first days of life. The CRIB II scale is an opportune indicator for identifying
mortality risk in neonates under 34 weeks of gestation.
