ABSTRACT
Since its early stage, the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has always been considered one of the causes of postoperative complications of the patient subject to extracorporal circulation. Research carried out on post mortem studies of patients subject to CPB show evidence of alterations in different organs due to microembolisms which origin can be either biologic, gaseous or of foreign material. Therefore, Dr. Swank suggests to filter the blood for transfusion from the cardiotomy and arterial deposit.Currently, the morbimortality in patients subject to CPB has decreased thanks to modern technology that includes filters for arterial blood in the extracorporal circuit for open heart surgery.
In this work, we will talk about the embolism as a complication in the use of the CPB, of the two types of filters that are currently in the market and their characteristics.
