ABSTRACT
Background: The most commonly found varieties ofT. mentagrophytes are interdigitale (antropophylic) andmentagrophytes (zoophylic), but its epidemiology is not clear.
Objective: to analyse 10 clinical dermatophyte samples isolated in Paraguay South-America.
Material and methods: The samples were cultured on: agar-dextrose-Sabouraud, agar with antibiotics, agar Czapek Doxand agar-potato-dextrose, at 30°C for 7 days. Macroscopicand microscopic characteristics were observed; microcultures, urease production (agar and broth), and hair perforation teston sterile soil, and horse hair, were performed.
Results: All the samples grew on all the medium tested, excepton agar Czapec Dox, on less than 30 days. Pyriform and spherical microconidia, macroconidia and spiral hyphae were observed. Agar-potato led to more characteristic microscopic features, and consecutive cultures led to pleomorphysm. In two samplestaken from the feet, it was observed growth of T. mentagrophytesvar interdigitale; it was identified on Sabouraud medium. Sixsamples were obtained from: scalp (1), skin (2), palm (1) feet(1) and toe nail (1). Five of them gave positive ureasa test(day 5), and five hair perforation test after two weeks. One culture was lost.
Conclusions: Molecular and morphological tests are more specific, but the physiologic and morphologic studies are more available and fortunately they are still useful.
