Efficacy of Acupuncture in the treatment of Arterial Hypertension

ABSTRACT

Introduction: cardiovascular diseases are nowadays the main cause of death in most countries, with arterial hypertension being a disease considered as a public health problem.
Objective: to evaluate the efficacy of an acupuncture treatment model in arterial hypertension.
Methods: a clinical trial study was conducted in 93 patients aged 15 to 65 years with mild arterial hypertension, who attended the Rehabilitation Room, in the period from May 2016 to May 2019, for which 2 groups were formed : a study one, to which acupuncture was applied, and a control one, which received conventional treatment; which were evaluated 3, 6, 10 and 15 days after starting therapy. Hypothesis tests for proportions of independent groups were used for the comparability analysis and the Chi2 test, taking as significant values those where the calculated probability is less than or equal to 0.05.
Results: it was found that all the patients treated with acupuncture decreased their high blood pressure figures in a short period of time without the need to resort to another type of therapy.
Conclusions: this therapeutic alternative was shown to be effective in treating mild arterial hypertension, for which its use was recommended for this purpose. It will be easy to generalize, as it is inexpensive and relatively safe.
