ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the risk factors related to the presence of nosocomial infections (NI) in a general hospital.
Design: Prospective study.
Setting: A communitary hospital, Mexico City.
Patients: A total of 281 patients who fullfilled the criteria for NI were included.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: NI were associated with procedures as surgery, mechanical ventilation and use of tubes and catheters (43.2%, p ‹ 0.1). The most important infections were localizated in low respiratory tract (50%), venopuncture sites (42%), urinary tract (27%) and surgical wonds (21%). The use of antibiotics (p ‹ 0.1), mortality rate (89% p ‹ 0.1), length of stay in the hospital (p ‹ 0.1) were both greater in patients with nosocomial infections.
Conclusion: The knowledge of risk factors can be contributes to decrease the incidence of NI in communitary hospitals.
