ABSTRACT
The reemergence of tuberculosis in the world has sparked interest in understanding the epidemiology and pathogenesis of this disease. With the use and establishment of molecular epidemiology as a new discipline, another dimension was added to the classical epidemiology of tuberculosis and the knowledge of the dynamics of transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis within a population has increased. The discovery of repetitive deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis chromosome, such as IS6110, has allowed the development of reliable molecular techniques in the characterization of strains of this species, as well as the determination of lineages and their geographical distribution. In Cuba, it has been useful in the study of outbreaks in closed institutions and in determining the circulating genetic patterns in the country. There are still great challenges that involve incorporating molecular epidemiology in tuberculosis prevention and control programs.
