ABSTRACT
Objective: To report the experience on critically ill patients admitted to an oncologic intensive care unit.
Design: Prospective study.
Setting: ICU of an oncologic hospital of México City.
Patients: Patients admitted to the ICU from January to December 1998.
Interventions: None.
Results: During the study period a total of 398 patients (mean age 50 ± 18 years, 227 women, 171 men) were evaluated. APACHE score was 14.5 ± 7.3 points, ICU stay 4.2 ± 5.2 day, days of mechanical ventilation 3.4 /± 4.7 days and mortality rate 24%.
Conclusions: The existence of oncologic ICUs is necessary for the management of critically ill patients.
