Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic, multifactorial disease characterized by an alteration in
carbohydrate metabolism, associated with a deficit in the secretion or action of insulin, resulting in
chronic hyperglycemia responsible for macrovascular and microvascular complications.
The prevalence of this disease is increasing, mainly due to the current obesity epidemic and lifestyle
changes, with high calorie diets and sedentary lifestyle. Chronic management of this pathology
represents a challenge for health personnel, for this reason the comprehensive approach that includes
lifestyle changes focused on diet, physical exercise and mental health, are capable of simultaneously
controlling most of the problems metabolism of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Lifestyle
modifications must be individual for each patient and based on the therapeutic objectives set.
