ABSTRACT
Introduction: Breast hypertrophy is a female condition characterized by increased breast volume, whose cause is variable. For its treatment, there are various surgical techniques, such as the vertical bipedicle reduction mastoplasty. Objectives: To describe the anthropometric outcomes of reduction mastoplasty by McKissock’s modified technique in the surgical treatment of moderate breast hypertrophy.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective, longitudinal study was carried out with 29 female patients with a diagnosis of moderate breast hypertrophy and admitted to the Department of Plastic Surgery and Caumatology of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital, between December 2014 until November 2018. Surgery was performed by McKissock’s modified technique. To evaluate the outcomes, post-surgical volumetric and longitudinal anthropometric measurements (at one, three, six, and twelve months) were taken and compared with the preoperative anthropometric measures. A patient satisfaction survey was conducted.
Results: The age group under 40 years predominated. The planned mammary anthropometric measures coincided with the postoperative outcomes one year after the intervention: the average rise of the areola-nipple complex was 4.6 cm ± 1.1. The average resected breast volume was 254.9 g ± 121.9. In 87.7%, vertical ptosis was corrected. Divergent ptosis was corrected to an average of ±6 cm. 10.4% presented minor complications and 89.6% of the patients were satisfied with the outcomes.
Conclusions: The modification of McKissock's technique in moderate breast hypertrophy recovers breast projection and morphology with lasting anthropometric results.
