ABSTRACT
Introduction: The epidemiological and physiopathological relationship of smoking has been described as a risk factor for developing asthma. Adults with asthma in their childhood, before exposure to cigarette smoke, return to present the disease.
Objective: To determine the possible relationship between the different types of exposure to tobacco smoke and some demographic and clinical factors regarding the severity of asthma in adults.
Method: A longitudinal, observational, retrospective cohort study was carried out. The sample was made up of asthmatics from the protocolized allergy and pulmonology consultations of Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital. For the statistical analysis, the chi-square independence test (X2), absolute numbers, percentages, mean and standard deviation were calculated.
Results: The was a predominance of the female sex, ages 60 years and more, with moderate asthma onset before age 12 and with more than 30 years of natural history of the disease and a history of atopy. Being an active-passive smoker was associated with a significantly higher probability of asthma severity, as was the rate of intense exposure to tobacco smoke and the place of exposure.
Conclusions: Certainly, there is a directly proportional relationship between exposure to tobacco smoke and the severity of asthma in asthmatic adults.
